The boys and girls of the Team usually start training in late August - several weeks before the first NorCal event.  The Team meets at LWSC on weekdays and weekends (Saturdays or Sundays - depending on other activities at Lake Washington) when there isn’t either a NorCal event or Holiday, from 1pm until 4pm.  The last session is late March or early April.
The Lake Washington Sailing Club, in West Sacramento, is the best option for High School sailors between Vacaville and the foothills.  We are much closer than the next two closest options -- Richmond & Stockton, giving them more water time for the number of hours spent away from home.  Less travel time = more water time.  Our Lake is ideal for training; small, but not too small, with good visibility, great wind and adequate facilities.

Yet we are close to the Bay Area so when the kids become competent and competitive, they can drive a little bit to mix it up with the big boys of the Bay area.
Although our program only started in the Fall of 2013, we are successful - our graduates have joined the Sailing Teams at UC Santa Cruz, UC Berkeley, the California Maritime Academy & Cornell University.
Boats – training will be mostly in Club FJs but students will also have the opportunity for other types as well as single-hand sailing using Sunfish & Lasers.
Coaching will be provided by experienced sailors and racers from the Lake Washington Sailing Club.  They will help with rigging, course set-up and other necessary tasks.  Coaches main focus would be safety and assuring maximum on-the-water time.
Training/Lessons – the main goal of practice will be to give the sailors as much "tiller time" or time-in-the-boat as possible. There will be opportunities to get to know each other as both individuals and sailors and learn how work together.  Time will be spent learning how to rig and tune boats with lots of boathandling skill-building exercises. That means hours of drills around buoys to simulate mark rounding. Lots of practice for regatta starts with countdown to get used to approaching a start line on time and with maximum boat speed.  Kinetics for increasing boat speed techniques and skills will be taught, as well as racing tactics and strategies and how to “find the best breeze”.  Students will also be taught “Safety boat” techniques and the use of powerboats to perform rescue, coach & race official duties.  At all times all coaches will be very sensitive to safety issues.
Eligibility – The program is open to 6th through 12th graders.  18-year-old and older students who are enrolled in a High School program are also eligible.  Homeschool students can compete on the HS Team for the Public school their students would attend.
Participants would be expected to provide their own PFD, gloves, hat, sunglasses, closed-toe shoes & sunscreen.

Fees – $300 for about 48 LWSC Training Sessions and Regattas.  This includes coaching and boat use.  Late enrollees should contact the team before completing registration.  The Commodore will have the authority to waive training fees.  Scholarships and Financial Aid may also be available.
Regattas - Team members are not required to compete in Regattas.  The Lake Washington Sailing Club High School Sailing Team program fully supports those individuals & schools which chose to participate.

Additional Expenses

There are fees for some Regattas, usually less than about $30.  Those who drive Team members and/or tow boats to off-site Regattas will be reimbursed by the other families for these expenses.  Some High Schools chose to purchase Team uniforms - this is also an individual responsibility and is not included in the training fee.
