Head Coach - On-Water - Ben Potter
Benjamin Potter picked up sailing while in middle school, learning at the Lake Washington Sailing Club’s Junior Sailing Program. Now, Ben is the Club’s head instructor for the Junior Program and is a qualified Level 1 Instructor under U.S. Sailing.
Ben is a Sacramento native, a 2013 graduate of C.K. McClatchy HS, and now is a Junior at the California Maritime Academy studying maritime policy. He plans to become an officer in the U.S Coast Guard after graduation, and continue sailing. He’s also a rower on the Men’s Crew team, and a member of the Sailing Club at Cal Maritime. Ben regularly races Lasers on Thursday nights at LWSC and crews on anything he can get his hands on.
The youngest of three kids, Ben grew up on the water thanks to his family’s interest of all things that float. Along with sailing and rowing, Ben is also an avid photographer and enjoys capturing natural landscapes.
Head Coach - Administration - Tom Locker
Coach Tom began sailing while attending Wright State University. Before graduation he moved west, finishing his BA at the University of Nevada. He is a retired Forest Ranger who now works in IT for a school district.
He is a US Sailing Certified Sailing Counselor, PSIA Certified Ski Instructor and USSCA Level III Ski Racing Coach. He taught and/or coached skiing for 22 seasons. He coached the Sierra High School Ski Team to the NorCal Championship in 1983.
He is married with two sons.
Head Coach - Instruction - George Biery
In 1990, while attending school at CSU, Sacramento Mr. Biery began crewing on keelboats - first J-24s at Stockton Sailing Club, then larger boats in Benicia and the San Francisco Bay. He has owned several boats and campaigned them in regattas throughout the Bay and ocean circuit.
Mr. Biery has been married for fifteen years and has three children: Geo (15), Gage (13), and Grace (6). Besides being a certified instructor through US Sailing, he is also certified by the US Fencing Coaches Association.
